So, we bought an RV!

How we chose our Class-C RV

I didn’t really want an RV.  It was my husband, Walt’s, dream, not mine. Although I love to travel and experience new things, I questioned, “After driving all day, do you really want to set up, hook up, cook dinner, and then clean up?” Also, I queried, “Couldn’t we stay a lot of nights at a hotel with a comfortable bed, hot shower, and free breakfast, for what we’d pay for an RV?”

But, for several years, while I continued to work full-time and he became retired, Walt persisted with his research, watching YouTube videos of families living their best lives traveling around the country in their RVs, and gently nudging me along.

Although I still wasn’t buying into the whole RV idea, I was slowly becoming intrigued. Then 2020 arrived.

COVID came into the world, and a diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma came for me. Fortunately, I was cured, and COVID became a lot less scary. But suddenly, the thought of traveling in our own little bubble became very appealing to me. Sign me up!

Walt really, really wanted a Class B. He wanted something small and convenient to park anywhere. However, it seemed that small things have very big price tags. Then we thought we’d go the route of a travel trailer, which would have been in our price range. That seemed like the perfect solution, and we loved shopping for them, until we realized we’d have to also buy a new vehicle to tow it with as our current SUV is not able to tow. The combination of a truck and travel trailer once again would have put us over budget.

Third choice – Class C. I mean, why not? We found one online that we thought would be perfect for us and drove five hours from Pennsylvania to New Jersey with high hopes and checkbook in hand. Unfortunately, it was a bust. The first thing that caught our eye was a huge dent in the side, conveniently not shown in the picture, and that was just the tip of the iceberg. So, we drove the five hours home, deflated and so over it.

As fate would have it, the very next day, I happened to be on Facebook and an ad popped up for a Class C…in our price range…in our area…and looking pretty nice. At first Walt, still feeling the sting of the previous day’s debacle, said to forget it. But this time, it was me who gently nudged him. After all, it was only a twenty minute drive, not ten hours. What did we have to lose?

So off we went, not with high hopes this time, but maybe cautious optimism…and our checkbook just in case.

It was love at first sight!

She was a 2011 Fleetwood – Jamboree – Searcher – 22′ long, so plenty of room inside, but not too long…and she was looking pretty fine!
